Start of the new year – September 2010

I’m sure you have experienced, recall or have read about the torrential downpours in the Cheadle Hulme region in mid August. Unfortunately for us, the school was flooded in numerous areas and school staff, the Local Authority and Brown’s Construction have been working tremendously hard to dry out the premises, clean up the mess, lay carpets and check electrics. We are almost there but the cleaning teams will not be finished until next week and teachers will then have a chance to prepare rooms and salvage documents and equipment.

Pupils should attend school from 8.55 a.m. on Wednesday 8th September. We apologise for this inconvenience, but hope that early notification will enable you to arrange child care for Tuesday.

Our Fabulous Summer Fair

We could not have asked for better weather on the day of our fair!  It was a wonderful occasion when families gathered together to have a fun afternoon.  There are so many people to thank for giving up their free time and supporting us on this day. I know the amount of work to prepare for a successful event is colossal and requires much liaison between the PA and school. There were many highlights but of course the ducking stool is always a crowd puller and it was pleasing to see that the wet year 6 children were not shivering after a soaking. The first time in at least ten years!

The P.A station on the stage kept audiences enthralled with a variety of entertainments as families camped out under the tree near the hill. We had Salsa and Hip Hop dancing tasters and demonstrations as well as an amazing limbo competition. The karate club gave a wonderfully disciplined performance of their routine despite the soaring temperatures.

Thank you children for the inventive stalls you created and I hope you enjoyed the whole experience.

Of course my thanks also go to all the staff who supported the children, stalls and families during what was a fabulous famiy event. It was wonderful to get back to school on Monday to find everything back in order – that’s down to you Mr Penney our incredible Caretaker!

Summer fun

I have been hearing about lots of fun times during the Whit holidays whether children have travelled away or had good times at home.
We had a marvellous time on Friday when 228 visitors attended our annual Dads’ Day. As conditions in school are very cramped due to the building project, it was a tight squeeze, but well worth it. This is the day that most children say is their favourite whether they have their own family there or not. No one is left out and and there were some wonderful activities. Year 6 dressed Dads as Queen Victorias, building a throne and making costumes before a royal procession and there were competitive Design Technology lessons in Year 5 when all groups made 5 aside football games. There was a strong worldcup football theme around school in the afternoon when Mr Foden led his special giant World Cup Wake Up and Shake Up routine. 570 people took part on the playground – a great achievement. In the lower school moving monsters were created and gigantic towers made of newspaper. It was a fabulous afternoon. We raised £750 pounds for the PA from our raffle and proceeds from the book fair will help to replenish the quality of our class reading resources. A big thank you to everyone who came along!
Special mention has to be made of one Dad who travelled from Dresden via taxi and plane to reach the school in time. There were many more from around the world and distant parts of the country. I want them to know how much we all appreciate their efforts to make this a great day.
On Saturday our Country Dancing team participated in the Bramhall Festival dancing through the village and appearing in their own special slot outside the Methodist Church. Thank you to everyone who came to support us and a big thank you to the children who had to sacrifice some special weekend events to join us. I received many complmentary comments from the local community about the children and their participation. What a wonderful few days.

A busy time ahead.

Year 5 children are having a wonderful time at PGL. Miss Losse reports that the weather is great and the food even better. After acivities the camp fire songs are deafening and everyone is ready to sleep at the end of a busy day. The second group have departed full of vitality and expectations of what lies ahead.  When children leave in year 6 this event is often the highest on their list of memories.

The building work is on target and we are now able to see the size of our new rooms and corridor. Terry the site manager is very accomodating to our needs and really appreciates 344 pairs of little eyes ensuring that his workmen are following safety procedures at all times by wearing their hard hats and identification badges. Brown’s have produced a newsletter that has been sent home this week and will be delivered to all our neighbours by year 6 post.

SATs tests are fast approaching and year 6 children are working very hard to be prepared for whatever may come their way. Lots of chocolate will be eaten that week and they certainly deserve it!!! Good luck year 6!

The start of building work.

You will see that there have been a tremendous number of changes to school over the half term holiday. Contractors have moved swiftly to board their site and remove storage buildings.  A new tarmac pathway enables children and parents to move between the Infant and Junior schools before and after school. Please may I remind you to call at the main school office during the day to sign in or make enquiries. All workmen and visitors on site will be wearing identification badges.

Inside the building, small areas have been boarded off to enable construction work to begin. The children are already fascinated by developments and our first assembly theme is about safety on the premises while work is in progress.

May I remind you of our Information Evening on Thursday 25th February at 6.30 p.m. when the Community Police Officer will talk about traffic around the school and Contractors will outline building developments.

Thank you for your support at this time.

Haiti Appeal total

An amazing £1,247 has been raised!!!!
Thanks to everyone for your generosity.

Haiti count up-date and school lunch arrangements for Monday

Funds counted and banked so far  = £800!

WOW!

 School lunches.

Due to a problem that occurred with the gas supply in the school kitchen today, all children who have a school meal in the Infant and Junior school will need to bring a packed lunch on Monday. Today children were provided with a selection of healthy sandwiches, salad, plain crisps and the usual selction of desserts.  The school office will credit payments for Monday.

All parents should have received a text message this afternoon about these requirements for Monday.

Mrs Williams

P.S

Many children said it was so good, they would like this every Friday. Sorry everyone this was only for today!

News from the week

HAITI APPEAL

At this moment in time our money counting machine is working at its fullest capacity counting all the coins donated to the Haiti relief effort. Similarly, there has been a continuous flow of donations from children who have made and sold cakes, set up toy stalls and involved themselves in physical activities to raise even more money. I do feel the children have really tried to empathise in whichever way they can with the troubles facing the children in Haiti.  We are so far away and it is beyond our comprehension how we would cope with such a disaster, but we have spent valuable time discussing the events and thinking about our global responsibilities.

A BIG THANK YOU to you all and the total amount raised should be available before the end of the school day.

TRAFFIC CONCERNS

I’m sure you are aware or even have been involved in the traffic congestion before and after school.  I am dismayed to learn that parents and carers resort to driving on the pavements at these times during the day!  I have contacted the Community Police Officer and the Parking Attendant Department to ask for professional support to prevent such actions and possibly a serious accident. We are aware that this is a problem around many local schools and so I am appealing to you to park and drive considerately to protect our children. I hope you can support us in this matter.

A Parents’ Information Evening will be offered on Thursday 25th February and led by our Community Police Officer; the topic being road safety.  This will also be an evening when we will inform parents and provide plans regarding the new building work that is due to start after the half term holidays. Look out for our letter regarding this event.

Regards,

Mrs Williams

Family leaders’ evaluation

Following our Friday meeting we have decided to evaluate ICT use at home and at school. We are going to collect questions to ask the children in our school about the amount of access they have to the internet,  including social networking sites. How are they monitored to ensure they are safe?

We are  looking forward to hearing your suggestions for questions.

Mrs Williams and Family Leaders.

Traffic Problems!

Several parents have reported incidents of wreckless driving outside the school premises before and after school. Cars are parking on double yellow lines and even mounting the pavement!  Everyone has a busy schedule but the possibility of a serious accident is growing.

I have contacted the Community Police Support Officer and the Traffic Attendant  Department at the Council to ask for help in protecting our children.  As parents, please do everything you can to make the journey to and from school safe. I will continue to talk to children in assemblies to encourage them to influence their parents and use road safety rules, however this is a problem that should be addressed by adults.

Thank you for your support in this matter.
